Who We Are
Arteaga’s Food Center is a family-owned business built on tradition, hard work, and a commitment to serving our community.
Our Founding Story
In 1972, Alfredo Lopez arrived in the United States from Mexico with a dream: to build a better life for his family. After years of hard work and dedication, Alfredo opened his first grocery store in 1993 in Newark, CA, originally named Chavez Meat Market.
As the business grew, Alfredo decided to honor his wife, Maria Guadalupe Lopez Arteaga, by renaming the store Arteaga’s Food Center. From a single store, the Lopez Family expanded Arteaga’s to nine locations across Northern California, embodying the American Dream.
Today, Arteaga’s is still a family business, run with love and dedication by Alfredo’s wife, children, and grandchildren. We proudly carry on his legacy, serving our communities with fresh, quality food and genuine hospitality—because our customers are part of our family too.
Who We Are Today
At Arteaga’s Food Center, we’re more than just a grocery store—we’re a family dedicated to serving and supporting our community.
Through partnerships, events, and initiatives, we’re proud to make a positive impact across the Bay Area.
Our Community Partnerships
San Jose Earthquakes
Since 2019, we’ve proudly sponsored the San Jose Earthquakes. From player signings at our stores to creating Earthquakes Trading Cards and fun promotions, we bring the team closer to our customers. Don’t miss our Taco Truck at the games—Go Quakes!
SAP Center
In 2024, we joined the SAP Center family. Stop by our booth to enjoy Arteaga’s most popular taqueria items at San Jose Sharks games, Bay Area Panthers games, concerts, and other exciting events.
Newark Football Club
Supporting Newark’s youth through sports is close to our heart. Arteaga’s proudly sponsors the Newark Football Club, helping kids stay healthy, active, and connected through soccer.
Broadway San Jose
We are proud to support the local arts and creativity of theater in the Bay Area. It has been a privilege to partner with Broadway San Jose, and watch art come to life in the beautiful venue of the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown San Jose.
Events and Outreach
At Arteaga’s, we love giving back to our customers and community through a variety of events. Every year, we host our Annual Posadas, where we spread holiday cheer with free toys for kids, ponche, pan dulce, live music, and photos with Santa Claus. We’ve also organized Health Fairs to provide wellness resources and promote healthier lifestyles within our community.
In addition, we created the Arteaga’s Scholarship. In 2023, we awarded a scholarship to a young soccer player from Hayward, CA, enabling him to attend California State University, East Bay. We look forward to supporting more talented young individuals in the future. We also proudly support Avanzando, a nonprofit that empowers Latino youth with scholarships and educational opportunities.
Our commitment extends beyond local efforts. Nationally, our team, led by Lupe Lopez, advocates for small businesses by attending National Grocers Association (NGA) conferences in Washington, D.C., collaborating with other grocers, and working with policymakers to create fair business practices that benefit both retailers and customers.
